Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (HHI) says its copper-contact selective-emitter solar cells have reached 19.7% conversion efficiency. According to the company, this efficiency level - which has been confirmed by Fraunhofer ISE - represents a new record for a selective-emitter solar cell using six-inch monocrystalline silicon wafers.

HHI's Green Energy Research Institute has improved on an original laser-doped selective-emitter technology to create a new solar cell by copper plating with a full-area aluminum-alloyed back electrode.

A laser-based selective doping process was combined with a plating technology to form copper contacts at the front electrodes without silver paste, resulting in a significant cost reduction, the company says.
